New Zealand Planning

Admittedly, I am a bit of a control freak tend to obsess about planning and dive deep into the details.   This trip has taught me about flexibility and winging it a bit, but I still try to head into each place with as much knowledge as possible in order to maximize our time there.

At some point in January I was attempting to plan for three countries at the same time (Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) and was getting a bit stressed trying to keep all the details straight. Christopher, being the kind and thoughtful husband that he is, asked what he could do to help. He offered to take on 100% of the planning for New Zealand and surprisingly, I agreed. For the first time in our relationship, I handed over complete control of the planning of something.

It. was. so. hard.

But guess what?  Christopher has done a ridiculously good job at planning all of the details and has actually blown me away a bit. (Don’t tell him that, it will go straight to his head.)  I’ve learned that a) he is a really good planner when I leave him alone and b) it is kind of fun not knowing where you are going.

The internet is a great tool for travel research, but you also end up knowing most of what you are going to see before you see it. Because I don’t know where we are going, I haven’t had a chance to look it up on Google Images or Tripadvisor, so the first time I see it is with my eyes in person. There’s been a few times that we’ve rounded the corner on a hike or on a drive and I’ve just been in awe.

Here are some of our favorites so far (watch out, fancy slide show ahead!):

One of my favorite parts of a relationship is learning new things about your partner, even after nine years. Thank you, Christopher, for planning the most wonderful New Zealand trip and showing me that you should be the one planning from now on.

“Aroha” from New Zealand,

Cathleen & Christopher

P.S. Stay tuned for some more New Zealand posts over the next few days.  We finally got decent wifi for the first time in weeks (wifi gives me life!), so I’m working on getting my backlog of posts up and published.
